FAQs About joe POS Beta

Some FAQs about our Gravity Payments partnership and our upcoming joe POS launch.

After announcing our partnership with Gravity Payments, we are thrilled with the enthusiasm of shops interested in standing up to Square and joining our POS revolution. We understand there are a lot of questions and reservations that accompany a big change to a new POS system, so we are here to ease those concerns.

Here are some of most common questions we've received about our POS Beta program, and the answers to those questions.

Q: "What does it mean to switch to Gravity Payments?"

A: When you switch to Gravity Payments, you will be given a special joe POS rate below Square’s current cost based on your average ticket. When you switch to the joe POS, you’ll receive an additional discount on your processing fee on top of that.

Q: "What are joe POS rates?"

A: As a joe partner, you will be given a special rate of 2.4%+$0.10 per transaction. Once we launch the joe POS to the general public in the coming months, the rate will decrease even further from there.

Mobile orders made through the app, where we generally spend most of our marketing dollars and processing fees, are at our standard 9% rate.

Here is the best part - the more shops that are on the network, the lower the collective rate we can do across accounts. So tell your coffee shop friends to join joe!

Q: "Outside of lowering processing costs, what benefits are there of having joe POS?"

A: With the joe POS, you get more than a POS and mobile ordering on one hardware package. As part of our mission to level the playing field against national chains (i.e Starbucks) we’re putting the same powerful system of digital relationships, loyalty, rewards and mobile in your hands. Our integrated solution comes packaged with a baked in CRM, mobile-first loyalty and rewards, and personal offers to bring you more business when you’re slow and increase your average ticket size. No additional hardware, marketing signage, or promotion efforts required. We’ll be releasing specifics as we get closer to launch.

Q: "What hardware is covered by joe? What hardware do I need to provide?"

A: We require Beta partners to provide an iPad that will be used as the main POS device. However, as one of our Early Access partners in our Beta program, we'll provide you with an additional consumer facing loyalty tablet with stand to collect customer loyalty numbers, and a wifi credit card reader for payment processing.

Q: "What payment options does joe POS accept?"

A: In the era of COVID, joe POS promotes contact free ordering and payment with card or through a mobile device. The joe POS card reader accepts all major credit cards via chip reader, swipe, or tap-to-pay. For a completely contact free experience, customers can also pay using Apple and Google Pay, or scanning a QR code using their joebucks balance in person.

Please be aware, while cash is accepted, joe POS beta version does not currently have a cashdrop feature. We recommend using a key-operated cash drawer until this cashdrop feature can be released in early 2021.

Q: "I have a printer, will it work?"

A: We currently integrate with Star Micronics bluetooth printers for printing receipts and tickets. If you already are set up with a Star Micronics bluetooth printer, then yes it will work great to print both in-person and mobile orders.

Q: "Can I provide feedback about my experience?"

A: Absolutely! We are looking for shop owners who can provide their expert coffee feedback on this beta product! What do you love about it? What features could use some improvement? What will fit the needs of your shop? We want to hear about it!

After launching you on joe POS Beta, our team will regularly follow up with you, set up round-table discussions with the joe Co-founders, and collect your feedback about your experience with the product.

Q: "Can the system handle offline orders?"

A: The current joe POS Beta does not have an "Offline Mode". We recommend beta partners have Square POS on standby exactly for this reason. But stay tuned! Our engineers are working hard to have this feature ready in Q1 of 2021 as we ramp up POS to general availability.

Q: "How complicated can the menu be?

A: As complicated as you want! joe is built specifically for the coffee industry. As former baristas, we understand the nuances of coffee and the importance of capturing every added shot and extra pump of syrup. Your POS menu will be based on your joe mobile menu. If you wish to add additional items, we have a team of expert menu builders here to help perfect your menu. Paired with our inventory feature on the POS device, updating your menu is a snap!
